Lady Elliot Island Wreck Salvage

The salvage of Affeica has been successfully completed. Lady Elliot Island, located 80 kilometres offshore, is home to a delicate coral cay at the southernmost edge of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is designated a ‘Green Zone’, which protects its thriving ecosystem. Surrounded by coral reefs, seabird nesting grounds, and turtle habitats, the island plays an irreplaceable role in regional biodiversity.

A High-Stakes Operation in a Pristine Environment

Working offshore in this environment poses multiple challenges:

  • The reef and island’s small size and isolated location near the continental shelf edge produce fast-changing currents, variable tidal flows, and unpredictable wind gusts, especially during rough weather or squalls
  • Conditions can shift rapidly from calm to turbulent, making navigation and positioning safety-critical
  • Vessel traffic in the region is diverse, including dive charters, fishing vessels, tour boats, and supply barges, requiring precision coordination to avoid environmental damage and ensure human safety
  • The area also experiences turbulent seas due to monsoonal shifts and tropical storms, which have historically led to capsized or grounded vessels

An Operation Beyond Expectations

Our team approached the salvage with careful planning and a focus on minimising environmental impact. But on the day, their ability to pivot under pressure was put to the test. As they worked to remove the wreck of Affeica, the crew came to the aid of a nearby recreational vessel experiencing a fire on board and that was beginning to sink. Their swift response prevented further loss and ensured the vessel and its crew were brought to safety.
