Port North Common User Berth Deconstruction and Removal Works

Commercial Marine Group was engaged by Brady Marine and Civil to deliver a specialist deconstruction and removal package at the Port North Common User Berth, located within the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal precinct.

Delivered in a live operational port environment, the works required careful coordination around ongoing wharf operations, hazardous areas, shallow-water access, environmental controls and the management of multiple work fronts across both land and marine zones.

CMG’s delivery combined commercial diving, barge-based crane operations, concrete cutting, excavator works, hazardous material coordination and environmental protection measures to safely remove redundant jetty structures and associated components from the site.

Scope of Works

CMG delivered a coordinated marine and land-based deconstruction package including:

• Removal and disposal of jetty walkways and associated deck structures
• Controlled concrete deck cutting, with sections cut to approximately 400 mm depth where required
• Removal of heavy concrete elements from the deck
• Temporary works to lift and remove walkway sections
• Cutting and removal of piles down to seabed level
• Removal of two modular buildings
• Removal of an asbestos building and associated pumps and pipes, with specialist support from Aztech Services
• Barge-based equipment and material movements
• Land-side walkway and pile removal using a 25t excavator supported by JWA Dura-Base bog mats
• Coordination of works within a live operational wharf and hazardous area environment
• Environmental controls, including mangrove protection and final site clean-up

Across the project, CMG completed:

• Approximately 200 metres of walkway removed
• Approximately 25 tonnes of concrete removed from the deck
• Two modular buildings removed
• 38 piles cut and removed to seabed level
• Approximately seven barge loads of equipment and material movements
• No incidents reported
• Positive environmental clean close-out, with the site left in good condition

The project required specialist plant selection to suit shallow-water and constrained site conditions. CMG deployed a combination of marine and land-based equipment, including the vessels Trojan and Vigilant, a transportable barge, the MAKO barge with 16t crane, and a 25t excavator operating over JWA Dura-Base bog mats.

This integrated delivery model allowed CMG to manage multiple interfaces efficiently, reducing the need for separate contractors across diving, barge work, crane operations and land-based deconstruction.

Project Significance

The Port North Common User Berth project demonstrates CMG’s ability to deliver complex marine deconstruction works in operational port environments where access, safety, environmental control and sequencing are critical.

By combining divers, crane operators, excavator operators, vessels, shallow-draft barges and specialist subcontractor coordination, CMG was able to provide a nimble and efficient solution for the removal of redundant marine infrastructure.

The project was completed safely, with no incidents reported, and closed out with a positive environmental clean outcome.
