Pipelay Operations – Offshore Pipeline Installation

Pipelay is the process of installing subsea pipelines across the seabed to transport oil, gas, water, or other fluids between offshore platforms, subsea systems, and onshore terminals. It’s a critical component in offshore energy and infrastructure projects, requiring precision engineering, specialized vessels, and real-time subsea control.


Types of Pipelay Methods

1. S-Lay

  • Pipe is welded onboard and laid over a stern stinger, forming an “S” shape to the seabed

  • Ideal for shallow to moderate depths

  • Efficient for long, straight pipeline routes

2. J-Lay

  • Pipe is welded in a near-vertical tower, forming a “J” shape as it’s lowered

  • Designed for deepwater applications (>1,000 m)

  • Minimizes bending stress, making it suitable for steep seabed slopes

3. Reel-Lay

  • Pre-welded pipe is spooled onto a reel onshore, then unspooled and straightened at sea

  • Enables rapid deployment

  • Suited for smaller-diameter pipelines and short to medium lengths

4. Towed Systems (Bottom Tow / Surface Tow)

  • Pre-assembled pipelines are floated or towed into position, then sunk into place

  • Used in shallow water, swamp, or coastal environments


Key Components of a Pipelay Spread

  • Pipelay vessel or barge with welding stations, stingers, and tensioners

  • Stinger to guide pipe descent and control seabed entry curvature

  • Tensioners to support the pipe and manage strain

  • Welding and NDT (non-destructive testing) stations

  • ROVs for touchdown monitoring and inspection

  • Survey/navigation systems for accurate route alignment


Typical Pipelay Workflow

  1. Pre-Lay Survey

    • Confirms seabed conditions, route clearance, and geotechnical constraints

  2. Pipe Welding & Inspection

    • Pipe joints are welded, X-rayed or ultrasonically tested, and coated

  3. Pipeline Laying

    • Pipe is deployed using selected lay method (S-lay, J-lay, etc.)

  4. Touchdown Monitoring

    • ROVs and sonar ensure safe, precise placement on the seabed

  5. Post-Lay Survey & Burial

    • Confirms alignment, depth, and burial status where applicable

  6. Tie-ins & Commissioning

    • Final connections to facilities; includes hydrotesting, flushing, and dewatering
